Designing a $2,000 “Lean Startup” video editing workstation

When we entered the video production business two years ago, the decision was made to utilize low-cost video editing hardware and software wherever possible.  Since our business focuses on YouTube product demonstration and training videos, we don’t have highly sophisticated video editing requirements.  But we do need to do the basics well – color and density correction, sharpening, and tonal enhancements.  More than that we need workstations that allow editing personnel to work quickly and efficiently, without having the annoyance of waiting for a slow computer.  After much research we took a chance and built a workstation for about $2,000 intended to meet these goals – and it did!  What follows is a summary of how we accomplished this. Business Examiner touts the value of website videos

I spend a lot of time reading online blogs having to do with making videos and using them as marketing tools.  It is generally understood among bloggers that videos can get your marketing message across better than words, particularly if you are providing useful “how to” information rather than a sales pitch.  Personally I still like to read local newspapers as a source of information.  After receiving a recent edition of the Business Examiner, a Seattle-Tacoma-area weekly newspaper, I was delighted to see not one but TWO articles about the benefits of using videos in your business.  Here are excerpts from those articles. Our customer Wade Maid creates products that make your RV look clean and shiny again.  Wade Maid’s motto is “Nobody likes a Dirty Beast!”  In working with them we’ve learned that it’s very difficult to photograph dirt.  Photographers know that the camera often fails to see what is obvious to the human eye.  Our problem has been what looks dirty to you and me fails to come across on-camera.  This time however we “slam dunked” the situation by filming one of the dirtiest RVs you’ve ever seen! Search Engine Optimization (SEO) demystified: Part 2 – It’s all about relevance

The objective of Search Engine Optimization is to make your website more visible to Google and other search engines.  Higher visibility makes it more likely your website will appear near the top of a search.  Part 1 of this series introduced the basic ideas behind SEO – the use of Titles, Descriptions and Keywords.  Early search engines such as Alta Vista, introduced in 1995, only considered website text.  In 1998 Google revolutionized the search business by inventing a way to measure a website’s relevance – and that’s what this post is about.  Continue reading “Search Engine Optimization (SEO) demystified: Part 2 – It’s all about relevance” »

6 Ways to make better online marketing videos

Much of my time is spent watching other people’s videos, and even more reading white papers and blog postings about how to make better videos.  Hollywood director Steve Stockman’s online film school repeatedly makes the point that “Less is More”.  When I took his course it changed the way I looked at marketing videos.  Since then all that I’ve read and watched has reinforced this philosophy.  Here’s my point:  Following these ideas will get your videos watched.    Continue reading “6 Ways to make better online marketing videos” »

Costco says: Develop a web-based strategy for success

Found it fascinating to open the May 2012 Costco Connection magazine, run down the table of contents, and find the lead article was about website marketing.  If ever there was a credible validation of  the web-based marketing idea, this was it.  It’s a must-read for all business people, particularly if you are trying to make sense of the big picture.  There’s a link below to get a PDF copy from our website.  I’m not going to give you a book report—instead will show you a couple of relevant quotes that hit the heart of the matter. HubSpot says: Website traffic generates more sales leads

The way people are making purchase decisions has changed dramatically the past few years.  Direct mail and telemarketing, which are categorically called outbound marketing,  are declining in relevance.  Inbound marketing, characterized by the Google search, is becoming much more important.  I recently read a HubSpot report on this subject.  I found their statistics about “sources of leads” to be particularly interesting, so I’m passing them along in this post.  Continue reading “HubSpot says: Website traffic generates more sales leads” »

If you’re considering posting videos on your website, your next decision might be whether to “make or buy”.   Being in the video production business we would tend to say contract for the services and just get it done.  On the other hand cost considerations or artistic drive may be influencing factors.  If you decide to make your own, there are lots of resources for how to run a camera.  In this post you’ll learn about an author who teaches you to think like a producer and make videos that people will actually watch.
